the car is an 83 camaro with a msd ignition and vacume advance on the distributor should i run the advance or no and what should the timing be at if i set it at 8deg then hook up the advance my mark goes almost strait up on the engine

The timing should be set with the vac.adv. off the dist. and plugged.8% is the correct setting if there have been no modifications to the engine.When you hook the vacuum up after setting the timing,yes the mark will change because the vacuum will advance it if it is working correctly.
