In the strictest sense of the word – data.
If you put a data disc into an old CD player, it won’t play.
Perhaps the newer players can play data.
All data can be read on the PC.
An MP3 is a highly compressed data file. Wave files are not compressed. The bigger the file, the higher the sound quality.

I think that WAV files are the actual music's size ... and MP3s are a compressed version of the music.
