Partly because the water companies need to make huge profits, partly because they are totally incompetent but mainly because we let them do it. We might moan a little bit about the inconvenience but we still put up with it. We should learn from the French and start protesting.

Is it really that important to have bright green luscious grass or a sparkling car?
Why aren't all new build houses fitted with a water butt as standard or even a grey water storage system? Then at least if you wanted to water the grass/ plants/garden or wash the car every week you could re-use the stuff that doesn't need to go down the drain rather than the clean, filtered and treated drinking water from the tap.

The water companies are in the business to make as much money as they can without investing in it. They lose millions and millions of litre's a year because of leakage. If they installed new pipes, instead of just making profit for the shareholders, then there would never have to be hosepipe bans or any other.

placed it away Penfold. call that a hosepipe ? i'm particular such petty, curtain-twitching nastiness will circulate on. And severe-tech surveillance from great Brother / Nanny State. Interlinked Water Authority / YA Profile / Illuminati desktops will have already got you ever flagged as a skill nighttime hoser. No such project in Scotland of path, If water replaced into as helpful as petrol, it would be doable to pipeline billions of gallons to the South. that's downhill each and each of ways regardless of each and every thing. Oh India : a grass is a tell-tale. A supergrass (Nineteen Seventies notice) is a severe-profile criminal who provides data against his fellows. additionally a verb to grass somebody up - snitch on them. Butt water - no longer as disgusting because it sounds. A water butt is in basic terms a barrel to seize rainwater for the backyard.

I don't know about other countries, but here in spain we have been suffering drought these past two years.
The whole peninsula is starting to become a desert! In Western Europe! Really now, if we don't buck up and behave ourselves like responsible adults we're going to scew this planet up IN OUR OWN LIFETIMES! Never mind our kids.
Bug your water companies to provide recycled water with which to hose your cars. Its worth it. We have made the people who run golf courses here use recycled water and you know what? They are green and healthy and bring wads of money into the spanish economy through tourism. No money loss for the water companies there. More people to buy their drinking water!
There is money in ecology. We just have to change our mindsets and get used to using "previously-mined" resources.
Go green. Go greenback.

Went to Menorca in July they get their tap water from three desalination plants, OK to wash in, wash up, have a bath in, water the garden but no good to drink.
I suppose we could have unlimited un-drinkable water.
The cost of drinking water really mounts up when you have to buy it in a bottle.
