Islam is the religion, and you're Muslim if you practice that religion. Different interpretations of the faith are Suni, Shi'ite, etc.
Cathlic, Luthern, Baptist are interpretations of Christianity.
Unitarian Universalists do not have a specific faith or interpretation. They have respect and tolerance for all faiths. Any and all ideas are welcome.
Some faiths are relative to certain cultures or ethnicities. Some are chosen or a family legacy.
There are religious fanatics and fundamentalists of EVERY faith in the world. There are those that distort the meaning of their faith to justify their personal agenda. Right now, the middle east is in the spotlight. During the crusades, the christians were. It has always been like that and it always will be. Each religion or faith will get their chance in the spotlight when is has fundamentalists 'act out'.

Islam is the perfect complete religion reveled by God to complete and correct mistakes of previous religions. Muslims are the followers of that religion. You should not learn Islam from Muslims because they vary in their adherence to it. Learn from the original sources.
