Let the number of socks be x & number of shorts be y

For last year, the equation is:
5x + 17 y = 315 ... (1)

For the current year, the equation is
6x + 18 y = 342 .....(2)

Now, if you need to evaluate the number of socks & shorts respectively, let us use simultaneous equations:

30x + 102y = 315*6

30x + 90y = 342*5

12y = 180

y = 15

x = 12

Let x be the number of pairs of socks, y be the number of pairs of shorts.

From last year, 5x + 17y = 315.
From this year, 6x + 18y = 342.
