We have rainstorms on a regular basis in Western Oregon. Thunderstorms have always fascinated me. They make our red weiner dog run for cover, but I enjoy the majestic spectacle of nature at her worst or at her best. The sheer power of a thunderstorm reminds me of how powerless we are against the forces of nature. I have gone backpacking in the Oregon Cascades with a down sleeping bag( when goosedown gets wet it is of no use) and no tent under the electrifying glare of dagger like(waxing lyrical, purple prose?) bursts of unbridled energy. Anyway, it was a big electrical storm that made a lot of noise. I had to huddle in a grove of fir trees at the 6, 500 feet alpine base of Mt. Jefferson to keep from getting drenched and freezing. I look back at that with awe and respect for nature. I was pelted with hail as well. When hail freezes over. Which was the in the morning. I learned to appreciate the companionship of female hikers. My wife and I both hike. The tent helps too.
