GOOD QUESTION Peter. You are right to ask about such things because they should not be discarded in your normal trash. Talk to your city's waste department and ask how you should dispose of it. Or ask the paint store where you bought the paint.

Our city has special pickup days when you can bring toxic household waste such as chemicals and paint. I'm sure yours does too.

First, don't throw it out with the trash. Even if your area doesn't have an ordinance against disposing of paint with garbage, it's not a good idea from an ecological standpoint.

Find a recycling center and ask them what to do. If they accept the cans (most of the ones around here do), then you've got the problem solved. If they don't take paint cans, they can probably tell you how to safely dispose of them.

If there isn't much left in the can I just water it down and rinse the can and dump it in the yard, if there is alot left in the can most cities have a clean up twice a year where you can drop off paint cans and petsicide containers. If you have several cans of paint that are still good some people will take them and mix them together and create a new color to paint a room!

I know in my city, they have number you can call. They will schedule a pickup day for items like that. We can't throw in with the regular trash.

Where I'm at, my local waste management will come and pick it up or has a drop off point.

Goodwill can take it, too.

Leave the lid off until it becomes solid then throw out.

Be sure to store away from animals and children when the lid is off.
