Intelligence and ignorance are different things. I think Americans are just as intelligent (or unintelligent) as anyone else. However it is puzzling why a country that is so rich gives so little importance to education. Its a real shame that so many Americans are so preoccupied with America that they have no time to think about the rest of the world. That said, not all Americans are ignorant, there are some very well educated Americans. (though you do have to look for them)
Now as far as soccer (football) why do you expect Americans to know about or even care about a French soccer player? How much do you know about Brett Favre or Reggie White? I bet any American could tell you something about them. And whats more is that soccer is a very rapidly growing sport in the USA and American knowledge and ability in this area will surprise you.

We aren't all stupid Americans, and your generalization proves that you aren't any better anyways. Soccer is not the most popular sport in the U.S., so many people only know what they see on TV, and that is what he is known for over here. Grow up, and get over yourself.
