It is my belief, based on the second sentence, that JP grew up and no longer played with the same toys.

My take is that he grew up and eventually dies... as the song goes dragons live forever. So they would outlive many Jackie's.

Incidently if you go to the north shore of Kauai you will see the mountain range that was the inspiration for the song. It looks like a dragon's head an torso winding towards the sea. There is a town there called Hanalei which became Honalee in the song.

He grew up, got some sense and stopped using the weed. In oherwords, he stopped puffing the magic dragon.
