The advise above is sharp.

However, if you are the natural mother of that child, are not an alcoholic or behave in a way that endangers the child, and the primary caretaker the grandparents can't just come and take him from you, just like that.

Take it easy, stressing you out may be part of their strategy to prove you aren't fit...

As second answer said, most major cities have a locale Public Defenders Office you might see if they will help you! If they won't go directly to the court of which you are to appear and ask the Court Clerk who may be able to guide you...

Good Luck! And if there is a reason parents want custody, make changes in your life as to prevent Judge to decide on them!!!

You have to prove to the court that you can be a good parent and provide a safe, clean and nurturing envoronment, and health care for your son as good as their grandparents can.

If you honestly can, then you'll be ok.

With no lawyer, say that you are doing well, but because they are doing this to you, they are causing a financial burden on you, and stressing you and your son out, as well as interfearing with your job and life. Make sure your son says he wants to stay with you. Tell them (court and grands) that you have no problesm with visitation and maybe overnight stays, but you are his mother and his HOME is with you.

Go to the Welfare or Public Assistance Office in the city where you live, they can guide you on what to do and may be able to help you find a lawyer.

Try to get a family law expert to take your case pro bono (for free). Lots of big firms do pro bono work. Call some attorneys, and ask if they do. Good luck!

What you are looking for is a legal aid attorney. Legal aid is staffed with volunteer attorneys who will help the disenfranchised (meaning can't afford an attorney types) get representation in civil and criminal matters. You are provided an attorney for free when you can't afford one (think miranda rights from tv. . .you are under arrest. . .if you can't afford and attorney, one will be provided. . .) for CRIMINAL CASES. This doesn't seem to fit that bill.

Stay strong during this painful period and fight for yourself and your children!
