In Asia, It is believe that you were to open an umbrella indoors and if it happens that that is/are spirits lurking around that area, they will hide in your umbrella and follow you to the next sheltered area/home. That's why the older folks "simplified" the explanation later as "unlucky".

Logically, I think, because it takes up space indoors.

Good Luck in your search!

Well, I can tell you why it's lucky--if you read the warranty on the umbrella (if yours has a warranty), it usually says that the umbrella has to be dried while open until fully dry and *then* rolled up and stored. When I was in college, I'd go down the hallway of my dorm and there would be umbrellas outside the doors drying every time it rained. I don't think it caused us any bad luck.

I used to have a book by Zolar about superstitions, but I had to get rid of it because every time I read it, I'd find all these everyday things that were bad luck and it would freak me out. I don't frequent superstition websites for the same reason. But hope you find what you're looking for!

Looking around, it seems that noone knows for sure. It might be due to it angering sun gods (originating in Africa, where umbrellas were sunshades). One of the sources I found thought it angered the house spirits, as you were implying their protection wasn't good enough.

it incredibly is superstition, it incredibly is down on your upbringing no count in case you suspect in it or no longer, i've got not got self assurance in it because of the fact i think of it incredibly is fake in each way available and in case you carry out a little element undesirable e.g. open umbrella indoors your going to make undesirable success ensue for your self.
