The stick makes an impact on the drum head which is a stretched material on some sort. At the material rebounds it produces sound waves by moving the air out of its way during the rebound. The pitch is determined by the size of the drum which produces the length of the wave. Wavelength or frequency is pitch.

its a squeeling when the shoes are worn, scraping sound when there is rust in them, or a grinding sound when the shoes are down to the metal.

if you bang on a drum on a piece of wire, it makes a metallic 'ding'

they do not make a sound, your ears perceive the vibration as a sound. A drum, when struck, makes a vibration
