i need to create a 3 dimensional model of an atom of aluminum. can you give me some tips on how to attach everything, and possibly some pictures? i have styrofoam balls. can i just use regular craft paint or will that ruin them? is there a certain color that should be used or can i just pick colors i like?

The actual color doesn't matter. Just remember to keep the protons the same color but different from the electrons and neutrons, the neutrons the same as all the other neutrons but different from the electrons and protons and the electrons all the same color but different from the protons and neutrons.
Remember to space out the electrons on each of their energy levels and the protons and neutrons together in the nucleus.
For the structure you can use craft wire (pick up at any arts and craft place) it is very easy to bend but it is sturdy. Good luck.

I've never had to make an atom model but I did make a cell model once - out of cake and gummy bears.

well if you want to do it correctly you have to make probability distributions showing the location an electron might be using s, p, d, f orbitals.
