What Some people think of "gaming laptop" that means you want a laptop that is for hardcore gaming with dual 512MB graphics cards.
If you only want to play Sims 2 and possibly add any expansion packs, ANY laptop is going to be fine, as long as it meets the minumum specs for the game. You would need 1 GB of Ram, 60GB hard Drive, CD or DVD-ROM, at least a 128MB graphics card but you might not have an option in that sense. As long as you like it, it will work for you.
Any one of these will do...

I would actually wait a couple of months until the new Intel processors prices drop some more. I would not advise buying any computer right now unless it is a Core 2 DUO, especially if your planning for it to be a gaming machine. These new processors raised the bar a LOT and as of yet AMD has not publicized their response to them that I know of. If AMD does not quickly release a competitive processor, this will be the first time in a LONG time that Intel has the market cornered for quality. Having tested the Core 2 Duo's against the Inte D 8XX 9XX, and AMDs dual cores, the new processors are by FAR better, not only in speed but efficiency, as they use much less power and run SO much cooler.

Save up some money and purchase an apple. Don't buy a PC - I have owned a couple of PC's thus far and recently had enough of crappy door stoppers that seem to slow down, no matter what CPU or memory you equip them with. Somehow after 3 months, they perform exactly like a Pentium 1. Apple is great: programs don't hang or freeze, quality is tenfold better than PC, they are much faster, dont out date quickly, you can run both mac os10 and windows on an apple (try that with a pc!), screen quality is crisp and detailed, standard programs are fantastic,... the list goes on. Bottom line, forget PC and get an apple. I dont regret this purchase one bit, unlike all the pc's I've owned. Good luck...

Alienware is good, but ya, definatly expensive. you want at LEAST 512mg RAM, 768 or 1 gig is better. The processor (while still important) isnt as important as a good graphics card for something like the sims (dual core is better for laptops though cause they run cooler). I dont know laptop video cards very well but I do know enough to avoid any intigrated vid cards.

Dell XPS and Alienware are both EXCELLENT laptops for gaming. Beware, though! Anytime you want a laptop good enough for gaming, it will cost you! You should try to find a good one on E-Bay. Sometimes you can find a good deal... occasionally. Who knows, maybe Santa will be good to you this year....
