I have XP home edition, and used to leave in hibernate mode all the time, till it crashed and I had to get a new hard drive, then the technician who replaced the hard drive told me XP home edition should be completely shut off for several hours each day

Leave it on in standby mode. We never shut ours off and when we use the clock screen saver, we always know what time it is!
