i have about 2200 sf of dead grass that is in need of serious repair. The logical answer would be to just lay down sod because they yard is in such horrid shape, but I am on a very tight budget. The soil is basically as hard as a desert floor, not to mention it is uneven. Can anyone tell me the proper way to restore my lawn? I fear that laying down seed and watering my not work due to my hyperactive dog. The last thing i need is to waste money on grass seed to find my dog pissing all over it.

Go rent a thatching machine to rip up as much of the dead grass as you can. New seed has a hard time getting established over dead grass. The new seed does best when it is touching the soil. Once you get it all thatched out, loosen the top 2-3" of soil, fill in any low spots. Put down starter fertilizer at the recommended rate and it should take about 12-14 lbs of seed to reseed 2200 sq ft. Ask your garden center tech which grass seed mix is best for you. Then keep it moist. If you are in a cold climate (like northern US) I would wait till spring.

With the new sod it needs to be generously watered everyday from the day you first get it for at least a week or so. It will grow but without water to start it off it will take a really really long time! If you put a lot of fertilizer without a lot of water it can hurt the sod more than help it. Just try giving it plenty of wate for a few days and see if it helps... how long have you had it? Have you tried spreading some grass seed out as well? on top of the sod that is.

Mow it down really short, then throw down copious amounts of rye seed...then water, water, water. It'll be green in no time. If your dog is peeing on it, there are several ways to deal with that. Is your dog female? Female dog urine is the worst for lawns. Pet stores sell pills that you can put in their food that will minimize the acidity of their urine, thereby protecting your lawn from burning. Good luck.

Throw new grass seed out over your lawn every fall. It is supposed to get rid of crabgrass too. Just what I've heard.
