David Byrne, former lead singer of Talking Heads. In both his solo work and the stuff he did with the Heads, he always had a unique perspective, seeing the sublime in the mundane. This guy can write a beautiful song about a piece of paper, a house, or whatever, in such a way that no one else can copy. Listen to the words of Naive Melody (This Must Be The Place) and if that doesnt' touch you, there is something wrong.
Other artists I feel connected to, George Harrison, Elvis Costello, Jim Croce, Nick Lowe, John Lennon.

Snow Patrol
Especially Chasing Cars
and the ironic part, is the first time I heard it, I was laying under the stars with my g/f and the lyrics go
If I lay here,
If I just lay here
would you lie with me and just forget the world.

Iron maiden
Lyrics:- Look for the truth, deepest cut of all from you..knife of the truth,
blade of hatred slicing through.
I felt these lyrics in more ways than one.
