I work in the maintenance department for a auto manufacturer as a purchasing agent. My manager thinks I need to learn what some of the parts I buy do. I buy a lot of prox switches and I have seen several, but I'm not sure what their functions is. Can anyone help?

prox is actually short for "proximity" switch. these are used a lot industrially and especially on rotating machinery (belts, conveyors, etc.). they can be 120v or 24v depending on the application. most prox's sense metal and give an input back to a primary logic controller when they are in a "blocked" state. look at Allen Bradley's website for more info on them. they are a very widely used component.

Its a limit switch, I'm not an auto mechanic, But we use these switches for safety in the HVAC field. Like in you home heater, If the fan stops running, The heat coil is still on, once it reaches a certain temp, The limit switch will kill the power to the coil.

Those are undoubtedly proximity switches that tell a piece of equipment something is in position (near).
