When I did my student teaching, the teacher I observed did something really fun that the kids enjoyed. She got giant reams of paper, donated by the local newspaper, and had the kids lay down and trace each other on the paper. They then drew their own digestive systems onto the paper...she had cut outs of various foods and would stick them on the giant drawings and use it to explain the workings of the digestive system.

Go to a butcher and get pig intestines or a cow stomach or other entrails. This always excites the elementary school set. Also read the book "Everybody Poops" and teach the digestive system backwards. Starting with poop gets more active attention and interest than starting with food.

When I taught this I started the lesson with handing out biscuits and told them we were going to talk about the journey of the biscuit and all the things that would happen to it along the way. That seemed to get them very motivated. Use a large colourful clearly labelled diagram at the front of the class. Go through all the names of the parts and how they link up what their job is etc. Then they get to eat the biscuit and throughout the day they can all estimate where the biscuit may be and what is happening to it.

Hope this helps!
