You can play some games, but like the other guy said, not all of them. Microsoft have made patches for some of the games, so some work, whereas there are other ones that simply won't work.
Try this link, it shows all the compatible games. Ones not on the list won't work.

If you have a hard drive, then some games are playable on the Xbox 360, yes.

dont bother the 360 is an infirier machine to the ps3 i recently purchased a ps3 from america and they are a lot beter than the 360 trust me the only trouble is i have to also get my games from there as the realease of them in australia has been put back yet again

Well yea, but only some of them. They will be updated year round though so after a while more games will be availible to play on the 360.
