Install a Firewall to protect your system. Something like Zone Alarm from Zone labs is free and offers good protection. It will block hack attempts and warn you when it sees them

get a firewall now most computers come with an inbuilt fire wall but it isn't very good you can pay about £20 for one and it lasts 2 to 5 years.
any way back to your question, it all depends on your fire wall some pop up with a message but others you can find out who has tried to hack you by going onto the information bit.
the best one i have tried is mcafie(probably not the right spelling) you can actually get a map up which tracks them.

the symptom are usually... you cant control your mouse properly, your Internet connection slows down all of a sudden.
as like mention before, get a good firewall software, AND when not using Internet, turn off yours modem if external, unplug telephone cable if internal.

try not keeping confidential information on your computer, and if u cant help it, make sure u have some sort of protection, like norton or something, which usually can detect things like that.

You Don't know someone is Hacking you until it has happened.

Just get a good firewall, virus scan (Scan regularly), don't open emails with attatchments unless you know what's in them, and don't accept downloads that you cant trust.
