I'll ask you then. Why would you buy an external harddisk (also known as portable harddisk) if it is not to be used on multiple computers since internal is much cheaper than external?
You can share external harddisk between two computers, the only problem might be how you would seperate your and his files (you can make a folder for your harddisk and a folder for your bro's or you could repartition the harddisk into two),
Also, realize that if you share your external harddisk, you won't have privacy, he'd be able to see your files and you'd be able to see your files (unless you put some measure, like putting a password to your files).
Note though: Don't install an OS (like Windows) on the external harddisk. External harddisk is made to transfer files between computers. If you install an OS on an external harddisk, the OS would only be bootable on the computer where you install the OS, the rest of the world would simply not boot or boot unproperly.

yep. Again, external dvd rw is designed to be able to be used on multiple computers at the same time. But I heavily recommend you to buy 2 internal dvd drive. The reason is, because internal dvd driver is much, much more reliable and internals tends to live longer than externals. Internal also usually performs much better than externals, in terms of reading speed and such.
Notice: If the only reason you want to buy externals dvd/harddisk is to save money, then don't, you'd better buy two internals, they're much cheaper and performs much better.

IF you want to use the external drive for storage only, yes, you can partition the drive and password protect each half seperately. YOu can't have 2 operating systems on it, and you cannot use it to boot the computer.
Just get an internal DVD-rw. It'll dun better.

You could definitely share an external hard drive between 2 computers. you could make 2 partitions on the external hard drive, one each for each computer.
the external dvd drive can be used between 2 computers as well. but you should make sure that your computer supports the external drives

of course. any computer with a usb port or firewire (depending on what you bought) will be able to upload and download files to and from the external HD.
