i was trying to connect my iriver to my computer and the iriver screen says it's connected but i still hear the connected and that is directly followed by the disconnected sound and my windows media player doesn't recognize it, i've tried using all my usb ports

make sure you have Windows Xp.

Once you've upgraded all of your cables, drivers, and OS, then don't use Windows Media Player. At that rate, don't use the IRiver software, or upgrade the firmware. Go all-manual on the iRiver and rip your songs using a freeware ripper, and then move your folders and songs onto the iRiver using Explorer. If you really need to make playlists, get an older version of WinAmp, and then use it to make playlist files.

I had the same trouble with my Sony MP3 player, then realised there's a teeny hole at the back which, when prodded, resets the player (without formatting it and wiping my tunes in this case fortunately), after which it behaved beautifully. Might the iRiver have something similar?

Quick and simple if you hav'nt already try upgrading to USB 2.0
