Real research began with Galileo. Before him science was Aristotelian - that is it consisted only of observation. It was the Galilean revolution that changed science into what it is today.

The word research itself derives from Middle French; its literal meaning is 'to investigate thoroughly'.

The subject would be physics although it was not separated out into modern categories at that time
