Neither Bipolar Disorder or Borderline Personality Disorder is a type of depression, though both can have depressive phases.

Bipolar Disorder is an Axis 1 disorder (physical/biochemical basis) while Borderlien Personalit Disorder is an Axis 2 personality disorder. The major difference between the two is that the Borderline suffers from feelings of chronic emptiness, fear of abandonment and may well self injure.

While they share many features and could arguably be classed as the same thing, there is good evidence to indicate that they are very different in nature. The treatment is different for each.

Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder. Borderline Personality disorder is a personality disorder. It is possible to be diagnosed with both.
There are several different types of bipolar disorder but it is generally characterized by extreme mood swings.
Borderline Personality disorder is a personality disorder characterized by self destructive behavior i.e promiscuity, substance abuse, self mutilation etc. instable self image , and extreme fear of abandonment. Both vary as to levels of severity and I can see why they seem similar to you. I personally think borderline personality disorder is more difficult to treat than bipolar disorder alone.

I believe that a mood disorder is physical in nature and a personality disorder is psychological in nature.
these two illnesses display alot of the same symptoms ,but the personality dis order is thought to come from outside elements. Its believed it starts with the child around 8 months to 30 months and the relationship that it has with the parent or caregiver. It seems that the parenting may have been erratic in behavior. It begins when the child begins the struggle to gain autonomy, this time is particularly crucial. Some parents resist the child's moved toward separation and insists on controll, exclusive ,often suffocating symbiosis.
At the other extreme parents offer only erratic parenting( or are absent) during much of the child raising period and they often fail to provide sufficient attention to ,and validation for,the child's experiences and feelings.
This can lead to a chronic loss of self and may lead to a chronic sense of attachment and or chronic fears of abandonment.
I could go on but.....................
