Do some self examination here... why is it that you find it hard holding conversations? Are you just not a huge talker? You don't have anything to talk about? If it's that you just aren't a chatterbug, maybe you should find a friend that IS! For a conversation to flow without you adding much to it, is easy. Just ask questions... make observations... i.e "that must have been frustrating!" "what did you say to that?"
On making friends... it's easier if you go out and do things you like, and enjoy yourself. Then people with common interests will be attracted to you.

I have a suggestion for you. Try reading the newspaper or watching the news, keep up on current events. Then you can start a conversation that way. Think about your views on the things you read. Become well rounded try new things. Good things that is like take piano lessons ect.. Build on yourself. You will find that will be really rewarding all the way around.

Well most people are shy. It's natural. Be yourself. People will like you for who you are.Sort of get to know them. Find something you have in common such as an interest. If people don't like you for who you are, that's their problem. They're not a good friend any ways.
