They'll keep you in a "Youth Detention Center" while they decide if you should be returned to your parents or placed in foster care.

If you want to run away, there are teen centers that are legal to go to for help. They will take you in, and then call your parents and set up an appointment to get to the bottom of things. You maybe able to solve your problems and return home. If you are being abused, they will not make you go back, but find placement for you. If you just hit the streets and start running, they will have no choice but to jail you when they find you because you will be breaking the law, called truancy from home. Use good judgement and you won't go to jail.

There is nothing illegal about running away from home. However, it is fraught with many other dangers that can be worse than jail. If you can't go home, seek help through community organizations that are set up specifically to handle runaway teenagers.

Not unless they commit another crime. A runaway teenager will be placed into the shelter, which in my city, is just a slightly less strict version of juvenile jail.

the answer is yes, they can, if this is a repeated problem. what are the reasons that this kid want to run away? is it because they just don't like the rules or is there abuse going on? if this child is being abused there are things that he/she can do. to get help. they can call the child abuse hot line that's usually a 1800 # talk to the guidance office at school. talk to a friend or a friends parents. but if it is because they just don't like the rules in the home, then they need to understand, that following rule are alot less harsh than being on the streets or being in jail.

Not unless they've broke the law. It is not against the law to be a runaway (unless you are a fugitive). I suggest not to runaway, but to face and stand up to your problems. Good luck and God bless!

If the teen has done nothing the Police, Family Court, or CPS will not place child in jail. Currently in my family we have a situation like this, and they all refuse to help. I feel as if they are just waiting for them to do something to go to jail.Remember this is USA .....we love our kids?!?!?! We have tried everything...just Pray they don't come to your door with bad news.

She could...........after a predator pimp get ahold of her and starts putting her to work. And then, after realizing that she is a prostitute, the drug use will certainly begin to dull her poor life. So as you can see, the jail may not be the direct route, but it will come eventually from prostitution or drugs

If there are problems in the teen's home that caused the running away - it's possible he/she could wind up in custody of the state youth authority.
