Ohh, not fair. First of all, baseball is MOST DEFINITELY American, but if you're gonna make an argument about that that, it was based on a game invented in BRITAIN (come on, this is where you're hailing from, you're dropping the ball here) called Rounders. Second of all, I love soccer, and I've been living in the midwest United States my entire life. The soccer program where I live is pretty outstanding, and I've seen even better in the cities (St. Louis, Chicago) near where I live. Second, we call Soccer "Soccer" because we already have a game called football that IS American invented. Bear with us on this, "American" football is too popular to go changing the name now. We had to give soccer a name that was too distinct from football so we wouldn't get confused. Would you be happier if we started calling it "American Rugby"? Or started calling Baseball "American Cricket"? I don't think many Brits would be too pleased. Don't try to tell other people from other countries that they're wrong about something that you don't entirely understand yourself. Besides, there's no reason to take offense to it... it's nothing personal about Britain, or soccer (football), or baseball. The only thing that matters is that people DO enjoy the game. The Detriot Tigers just won the American League Championship, and the St. Louis Cardinals are facing the New York Mets right now for the National League Championship. Whoever wins that gets to face off against Detroit in the World Series. But are you watching baseball in Britain with everyone else over there? Probably not. Don't worry about why soccer isn't as popular here... just know that it's getting there, and that nobody here is bashing the rest of the world for liking soccer.
In the meantime, GO CAMBRIDGE UNITED!
*PA System comes on, blaring: "I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts, there they are all standing in a row, big ones small ones ones the size of your hea...."
PS: Spot on about basketball being invented by a Canadian. Many Americans don't know this... so keep it hush if you would, please. :D

Americans want instant gratification, and lots of it . . . we can't be bothered watching a sport where the final score of a really good game is only 3 to 2 (unless it has lots of really bloody violence, which is why Ice Hockey manages to slip through) - the American prejudice against the sport the rest of the world calls "football" is based entirely on the rest of America's social and cultural biases - stupid, unfair, but nonetheless real, and like America itself, it ain't going away any time soon . . . however, as Soccer diffuses through Suburbia, it is lessening somewhat in recent years; however, Soccer will likely never be as popular in America as American Football, for the simple reason that American Football LOOKS BETTER ON TV - which is the ultimate American social and cultural bias - just look at the waste we've elected to the White House once after allowing him to steal his first election and lie his way into an unwinnable war, BECAUSE HE LOOKS GOOD ON TV.
