Which was your favourite?

And if possible, please state the name of the mix (for example, Song X [New York extended vocal mix]).

Oh, and if you know of any rare mixes exclusive to the vinyl format, by all means, tell me about it (for example, Welcome To the Pleasure Dome [Pleasure Fix] by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, differs from the Pleasure Fix found on CD).

Go ahead!

Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Two Tribes (Annihilation Mix)

Awesome, simply put.

Also, the 12" mixes of 19 by Paul Hardcastle, I'm thinking the 'Final Story' mix.

Check Paul Hardcastle's mix of 'Now that we found love' by Third World - sheer class.

If you want 80's flavour try the 12" of 'Can't you see' by Vicious Pink.

Finally, (but could go on for decades here!),

Cameo - Cameo Meganmix, it was the flip of the 12" of 'She's Strange' which was a tuuuuuuuuune in it's own right.
The megamix was done by Les Adams and features She's Strange, Single Life and Attack me with your love, all fused seamlessly and very creatively.

F.G.T.H. were on the ZTT record label who were notorious for releasing multiple formats of singles. Two Tribes came in about 9 different mixes sometimes with the same sleeve and catalogue number. Propaganda, who were on the same label, and the Art Of Noise also released many mixes of their singles, mostly unavailable on CD to this day.

During the 80's and early 90's most releases included the 12" format with mixes unavailable on CD. Pet Shop Boys nearly always released a limited edition 12" which differed from the standard 12"/CD release...It's A Sin, Heart, Always On My Mind, Domino Dancing, It's Alright, and so on, some which are highly sought after by collectors. Singles would also be released in different mixes in other countries.

With the dance scene most of the house/rave records were released only on 12" and although compilation CD's were released, many of the 'tunes' remain on vinyl only.

I could list hundreds of examples for you, but a sure bet to finding mixes unavailable on CD is to track down any record released before about 1988 when the CD single started to become popular.

The 12" was also used as a way of releasing different b-sides, sometimes 2 or 3 on one disc as a way of tempting fans to part with their money!

I remember being in my local record shop in the early 80's and seeing a Duran Duran single in 5 different sleeves (a different band member on each one) on both 7" and 12"

I wish you luck in your collecting...

Road To nowhere - Talking heads -12" version, total rip off, 3 minutes 58 seconds on a 12 inch, it would have fitted on 7" single

Don't really go for re-mixes (it's an age thing)

"Our House" by Madness was the first 12 in I ever owned. I don't have any of them anymore. "Relax" by FGTH was a favorite. I can't remember the exact mix name but it was on vinyl that had been released in Japan.
"Bizarre Love Triangle" by New Order. I also had another I liked by Belouis Some.

ahhhh the good ol dancin days. Where's my eyeliner?
