I had just watched "The World According To Garp". I like it though, but why Jenny (mother of Garp) assassinated and so Garp closer before the end of the film? Is he dead in the story? Or just survived?

Jenny was killed because she fought for women's rights and she had opened her home for women in trouble.

According to the plot summary from imdb.com
"Jenny writes a feminist manifesto at an opportune time, and finds herself as a magnet for all manner of distressed women"

I know the movie left it hopeful that Garp may live, but he actually died in the book.

In the book, he was killed. I think that in the movie they deliberately made the ending a little unclear, so you could believe either result you wanted to.

He was killed in the book, too.
