Probably the latter, although an AMD Athlon would smoke both of 'em. And a Core 2 Duo would beat the Athlon. But if those are your only choices, the 2nd one.

The second config would be the better machine of the two - those 533 & 800 numbers refer to the bus speed of the memory - and the faster memory transfer speeds would far outperform the 0.4ghz difference in the processor speeds.

Yes I agree, unless you are buying specifically for a certain motherboard you already have, I would HIGHLY suggest Intel's new Core 2 Duo family of chips. The 1.8 GHz from that line will beat just about anything on the market if it has good mobo and ram in my opinion. The 1.8's are selling at a very competetive price, as are the mobo's to run it on. The pricing on these cpus are greatly increased when going from 1.8GHz up to the daddy of them all at 2.93GHz which lists at around 1000.00 on most suppliers sites.

A very own computer processor will continually be quicker than the computer version for the comparable value. notwithstanding the two a sort of processors are fairly sluggish whilst in comparison with greater present day processors, the Pentium 4 hyperthreading processor would be quicker than the cellular pentium. It in simple terms relies upon on whether you want it to be cellular or no longer. while you're comfortable with velocity on the fee of mobility, then very own computer is greater desirable, while you're comfortable with mobility on the fee of velocity, the computer is greater desirable.

I'm not sure how one defines "Performance" But I would look for a processer such as either one you've listed, combined with a system bus thats 800MHZ or faster.
