Have the Idle Air Control valve checked. This controls how much air enters the engine on startup and at idle. Pumping the gas opens the throttle plate and allows air in, which is why pushing the pedal allows it to start. Check the IAC valve.

Your car is fuel injected so pumping the gas pedal really does nothing for the starting as no fuel goes through the throttle body only at the injectors themselves. It could be a clogged fuel filter which is either mounted under the car somewhere a service manual will offer better insight as to it's location or it's inside the fuel tank as part of the fuel pump and cannot be serviced unless you replace the fuel pump itself which involves removing the fuel tank itself from the car.You may have clogged fuel injectors or a clog or restriction somewhere between the fuel pump and the injectors. If it's a minor restriction then a couple of bottles of "LUCAS BRAND FUEL INJECTOR CLEANER" should clean it out put the cleaner in the tank first then put your gas in to mix it best.Another thing is that the fuel pump may be on it's way out and only a repair shop that specializes in fuel injection service can answer that.Another thing you did not say if this problem happens all the time or intermittently so i cannot offer more insight.
