Oh! my god
I'm in Vancouver BC too
I tried one phonecard
called 'Vietnam'
I bought it from Waterfront station [right infront of starbucks] for 5 bucks
I can called my girlfriend in shizuoka for and hour and ten minutes
but for calling to celphone is only 20-30 minutes

not as cheap as internet though but you can talk anywhere anytime

There are very cheap international cards. In Japan, we can buy them at convenient stores. Check at your local stores too. Also look online if you have a credit card.

Get Vonage (voice over internet) and you can call anywhere in the world for pretty cheap

and as for the microphone, buy one. headsets aren't that expensive for your computer.

Get Skype. You can speak computer to computer for free and computer to phone very cheaply.
