Media play an important role in educating the masses; it helps in making them political and socially conscious of their needs and rights. Its disadvantage is that it tends to sensationalise and prejudge an issue.

Yes - consider Bob Woodward & Carl Bernstein. They broke Watergate, leading to the resignation of Nixon & creation of rule # 1 - don't get caught.

But seriously, in some countries (e.g. the UK) where the media is not extremely biased one way or the other, they carry messages to educate, rather than repeating what people said.

Consider that news causes action/reaction in society - Were Paul Revere & the Sons Of Liberty - revolutionaries or media ? Was broadcasting the message "The British are coming" reporting intelligence, or the media informing the public. I think both, probably.

Our world is not just the area we can see & hear & live in. It goes beyong that - even globally. We have to rely on the media to provide information to us, that we could not get otherwise.

It's also social networking as in MySpace & Youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDDjD_0cmX8&mode=related&search=

Q. Is your view on the wars in Afghanistan & Iraq formed on media reports - like http://news.independent.co.uk/people/profiles/article1870843.ece as a society, won't our votes next month be based on the wars ? Won't we elect leaders based on the media - I've never met John Kyl or Jim Peterson, I've only seen them in the media & I have to choose, based on that !
