Reading the previous answers from non-atheists, it's interesting to see how either people don't have a problem with atheists, or they think atheists are pondscum right down there with pedophiles and sleazy politicians (but I repeat myself).

Those believers who have been brainwashed by their religion into thinking that atheists are somehow evil simply for not believing in fairy tales should do both themselves and atheists everywhere a favor and not marry an atheist. OTOH, open-minded believers who judge people only once they've gotten to know them and on a person-by-person basis, may be pleasantly surprised at the depth and joy of a relationship with an atheist. Atheists are by their nature people who use their brains regularly, have interesting perspectives, and believe in enjoying life to the fullest. All qualities that make for a great life partner.

I'll have to admit I may be a bit biased here, being an atheist myself. But I know other atheists too, and how I describe them certainly seems to fit. In case you're curious, I'm married to a Buddhist myself. Although our views differ on theological matters, it's never been a problem for us, because we each respect the other's views. We've been happily married for 2 years now, and I'm looking forward to many more.

A Christian depends on his god for his ethics and behavior. They either believe they will instantly be forgiven for anything they do wrong, or blame the devil for something they have done. An atheist has only themselves to blame for unethical behavior. An atheist takes responsibility for their actions. They do not blame the devil, original sin or any other excuse.
There are good people and bad people and everything in between. The lack or possession of a religion does not make a person good or bad. It is how they treat their fellow man.

I did as well. You are going to have differences in a marriage. First, move in with the person to see if it is something that you can deal with. The atheist might have a problem with you not being one. Just let them stay home when you go to church and don't pressure them to go with you. This is something that you can work around! I am sure that they are an amazing person for many other reasons if you are considering marriage. Like I said.....move in with them to see if this is a problem that you can overcome. Good Luck!

I am an atheist and my wife is a practicing Catholic. We have been married for 8 years, very happily I might add. It all comes from mutual respect. I respect and value her ideas and she does the same for me. We have excellent debates and she is never afraid to tell me how she feels. I even attend church with her for support. If you truly love someone there is no obstacle that is too big to overcome.

I'd have a hard time marrying anyone NOT an atheist.

But of course, i'd hate to live with someone who's delusional and has a distorted world view based on things that are unseen and unknown.

Not because they are an atheist that's for sure.
I would prefer an intelligent contemplating atheist wife.

Judge not lest ye be judged yourself.

Well OK, we gotta make some judgements sometimes but you shouldn't judge someone based on their religious beliefs (or lack thereof). We're all human beings first and foremost. Love and respect is all that really matters.
