if you had to work for the family of a woman for seven years before could take her for your bride or like you became the family slave what does this say about western culture values

The tradition before was very different from what we have now. Your question above does not really match with the description you have below below because Melchizedek is the king of Salem who met and blessed Abraham after he fought in the first war in human history to rescue his nephew Lot and his goods from Sodom(Genesis 14:18-20). Then the description you mentioned below your major question says something about working or slaving away for 7 years in a woman's family before you could take her to be your bride. This was mentioned in the old testament and you have to understand that the society back then is mainly patriarchal and women are not permitted to marry unless with the permission of the parents which may still be applicable to our society right now. Although it is no longer the tradition that a man will have to slave away to please the woman's family, the western culture might even be very open to the idea of marriage, not slavery, if both are consenting adults or if 18 years old, with parent's permission.

Hope I have answered your question. Goodluck!

You are talking about Jacob and Rachel and Leah. Jacob was done bad by his father in law, Laben. Laben was proved to be a crook anyway. But sometimes we have to just put up with things which happen to us. Jacob had a far more glorious future than Laben will have. But God has his purpose in this anyway, cause out of them came the 12 tribes of Israel through which the Messiah came - so all was not lost.
