I have a cracked winshield that has spread nearly across the entire windshield. Since it is not in my line of sight, it does not impact my ability to see and drive safely. It is an older car so I don't want to replace it if I don't need to.

Don't worry about the windshield blowing out or falling in your lap!The front windshield is not like your other windows in your car,it is made not to explode into little pieces like the side and rear windows just for the reason of rocks and other debris from the road hitting your windshield. The only worry is if a cop pulls you over and wants to be a hard *** he can give you a ticket but it will only be a "fix-it" ticket.

depends on the type of vehicle and the angle of the windshield. I have seen truck and bus windshields blow inward after being extremely cracked but this is a rare occurance. I had a 78 firebird that the winshield completely shattered but stayed intact. I drove it for a long time with a completely spiderwebbed windshield. Most cracks won't cause the windshield to cave in but it can cause it to leak in the rain. Some states have laws regarding cracked windshields so I would check those out before continuining driving it. If it is cracked across the drivers vision area I would reccommend it being replaced as most windshields are not that expensive and can also be picked up from a salvage yard for around 100 dollars. Whether you replace it or not is totally up to you, your state law, and your finances. A cracked windshield only continues to get worse so I would reccommend replacing it.

Cracked windshields are dangerous the minute they become cracked! In most states it's illegal to drive with a cracked windshield because they could shatter at any time and cause serious (or fatal) injuries to the driver, passengers, and other people on the road. You could be driving with a small crack in your windshield and have it abruptly explode into a thousand pieces because the car in front of you kicks up some rocks, or because a stupid bird runs into you. Just replace the windshield, the cost of causing a wreck or seriously hurting yourself far outweighs what it would to replace the glass.

I've had one like that for several years. Hasn't caused any problems. If it starts to spread like a star, get it replaced. That can weaken the windshield and cause it to land in your lap at high speed. Doesn't happen often, but it CAN happen.

it sounds already illegal and it can fall out on slight impact or big bump in the road.and a cut across the face or worse through your neck .. well is that worth saving a 100 bucks?.
check for ads in local mail flyers or Sunday paper and get a deal.
but replace it.
its a ticket and an accident waiting to happen

Just because it's not in your line of vision doesn't mean it's not dangerous. It's broken and weak.
