songs, bands, albums, what is the best heavy metal. could be from the birth (aka Led zepplin, black sabbath, etc) or from the glam era (motley crue, twisted sister, etc. my least liked but maybe your fav), thrash (metallica, megadeth, slayer, etc.), death (death, napalm death, etc.) or any other subgenres: black, melodic death, power, speed, alternitive, nu-, progresive, christian, groove, folk, etc. etc. whatever makes your head bang.

Well, Zeppelin and Sabbath are the roots from which all the others grew; Sabbath a little more so as their music didn't include nearly as many different influences nor go off in as many different directions as the Zep; while there were a lot of excrable excesses in the Glam Era, you can't discount SLAVE TO THE GRIND by Skid Row or APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION by Guns 'N' Roses; Metallica is perhaps as important a band as Sabbath, having managed to achieve massive popular appeal while maintaining personal and artistic integrity in the face of such overwhelming success (and if you think that's easy, check out the careers of nearly everybody else); most post-glam metal seems (at least to these middle-aged and severely-ragaged ears) to co-opt and recombine the forms of the different sub-genres as if in an attempt to refine their very essences into an Ultimate Metal Substance - an attempt which cannot be expected to succeed, as metal is itself a triumph of form over substance.
I'm old enough to remember a time (circa 1971) when there were only four popular bands who were considered "Metal":
Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Uriah Heep
(who? get ahold of "URIAH HEEP LIVE" and find out, or watch This Is Spinal Tap for the movie version).
There've been lots of changes over the years, but metal still stands tall, 35 years later, and will still stand tall as long as there's anything left to rebel against. Right now I'm massaging a sore neck from headbanging to Nirvana, because Kurt loved Sabbath too . . .

GOD YES. Watch some videos of them. Even travis barker in blink 182 gets tired and hes not a metal drummer. one of the reasons that bands have extended interactions with the crowd or play short joke songs with just lyrics/guitar is to let the musicians get their breath back. Metal drummers are more used to heavy punishment during a show but they are still really REALLY tired afterward.

Nightwish has the most melodic songs, beautiful vocals and good lyrics. There's not one song with them I don't like.

My favorite songs by them are:

Dead boy's poem
Ever dream
Sleeping sun
Swanheart
