Try Wisconsin. My reason for this statement:
My daughter bought a 93 acre, four bedroom farmhouse in Wisconsin, and the total cost of this home was $85,000. It is a wonderful place, sits high on a hill, and is beautiful. The price of this property here in New York State would be well over one million dollars. So I would think that one with an acre would be much much less in Wisconsin. Also North Dakota or Montana. I hope this helps you.

In Iowa where people are bailing out from their farms you can buy one cheap with many acres. Your next door neighbor is 20 miles away. Your (non-farm) job could be 50 miles away. But you do get home and land cheap.

The Rio Grande Valley, TX. The cost of living is low but there are alot of teaching, engineering, and law enforcement jobs, so there is a lot of disposable income. But its on the border...

I read it in Forbes, I can't remember all of them, but I know Las Vegas (NV), Knoxville (TN) were in the top 10 list.
