You know when you've said out loud, "Well, I've not dropped anything today, KNOCK ON WOOD!" or "I haven't had anyone yell at me for something all day, KNOCK ON WOOD!" Both times you literally 'knock on wood'.

I think that I heard once that knocking on wood dates back a ways to when people believed in the gods of nature and knocking on wood was a way to appease the gods of the trees, or something. Sorry I can't remember more specific details.

Knocking on wood or any solid object is a way to separate reality from ficiton for the speaker.

If the speaker doesn't hear or feel the knock then he/she must be dreaming.

How many times have you seen and heard someone "knock on wood" and then say in various levels "OUCH".

If you didn't hear them, maybe you were dreaming.

Good Luck.

I knock on wood just in case. It doesn't hurt to be cautious.
