well males develop breeding tubercles (white pimples) on the gill covers and on the leading edge of the pectoral fins
females develop a deeper body as they fill with roe (eggs), and have a larger vent (just before the anal fin) than the males .... The males vent is more sunk in the the females. Also the males have wot is called a "hood" on top of their head when they reach the age of an mature Adult

If you just bought it then is may be too young still. Check out her vent though, where the poo comes out, if it looks like an outie then she is a female if it goes in or is just flat then its a male.

From what I've always heard, without seeing it lay eggs, the only way to tell is disection!
