I haven't seen a stage version but I have seen the film.

I thought it was great. It shows the humanity and frailness behind power, which at the end of the day is as true for George III as it was for Kennedy or Mao or Stalin. The symbolism in the film is also quite thoughful, but a bit obvious (for example using King Lear to compare George's illness with Lear's).

The thing I thought was most poignant is that in a crisis, the royal family were not in control at all, not even of their own bodies. They were ordered around and powerless in the face of the bullying courtiers and medical lack of knowledge. There was no mercy for him.

I've seen the film starring Nigel Hawthorne, absolutely brilliant, fascinating and tragic.
