I take paypal payments on-line, but don't know how to go about getting a chip n pin style machine so I can take credit card payments in person.

Go to the bank who provide your business account. They will supply you with a remote machine if that's what you need. It won't be free though. I think they usually ask for about £250 plus a monthly fee plus a percentage on each payment.

As for my online business, I've used a merchant account at First Data. It can be expensive, indeed. Monthly rate will be about $100. and with any card swipe or "over the phone" transactions, they will have a charge. Try linkpointcentral.com.

Unfortunately, talk to your bank where you have an account established. They'll walk you through all the steps, and how to remit your carbons by phone.

Warning: They'll probably charge an arm and a leg for the service, not the machine.

As well as the advise you have already had, they usually ask for a business plan and projections for future sales.
