I have an unfinished basement. I only use it for laundry, and my computer... and i dont have a problem with it being colder than my upstairs. I was told that opening up my vents down here would help with my heating costs because heat rises, adn it would help with the rest of the house. What do you think? Agree? If so, why. Disagree? Why not? Please let me know what you think.

Okay... when I say vents... I am referring to my heating ducts. You can open, or close them. I am NOT referring to vents to the outside. The vents being open would allow more heat in the basement.

it probably wont make a noticabe differance on you heat bill, but you will have a warmer floor on the upstairs. opening the vents will help to lessen the humidity in the basement as well.

i think of that your builder become superb. wintry climate or summer season the basement must be ventilated as a fashion to ward off fungal growth including mildew. warm air RISES, on the grounds it quite is lighter than chilly air. chilly air would not upward push in a restricted area. whilst the chilly air from the basement meets the nice and comfortable air above, it is going to condense on the basement ceiling, and those telling you to no longer ventilate, won't come to freshen up the mess.If the upstairs is chilly, take place the warmth, do no longer assume that the basement vents are the reason, and there must be insulation between the basement ceiling and the floor above. close the basement vents at evening via all ability, yet open them interior the morning, that's what this type of vent is for.

i keep mine closed all the time. i don't need the heat in the winter, and don't need a/c in my basement in the summer. i figure the closed vents cause more air to blow upstairs. maybe that is a simple way of looking at it, but i figure a few less vents for the air to travel out of means more air blowing out the open vents.
