It's never to ealy to shop! I shop all year for peoples' Christmas gifts, it's cheaper and I find better things throughout the year.
Decorating.. Well, that's really up to you. If you seriously decorate, like with 15000 lights on your roof, angels and santas in the yard, then you might want to think about atleast setting it up right now. If you wait to put lights up outside all you'll be doing is freezing your butt off come December. If you decorate the inside of your house you should wait till mid-November to start preparing for Christmas, and at that point do a thorough cleaning of the house to best enjoy your decorations. =D

Shopping for gifts, anytime. Decorating, that's just tacky. Three months until Xmas. It's not even All Hallows' Eve yet.

My grandmother always told me the Earliest you could decorate for Christmas was the day After Thanksgiving. But then, with all that turkey in your gut and all the sales going on, who would? At any rate, After Thanksgiving. Shopping? Start the day after Christmas and stock up for the next year!

I think it is a little to early for decorating but not for shopping. WE have three children and in order for us to cover gifts for them we have to start early.

Let me guess, you love Christmas, it's ur favorite holiday.
Ya, go ahead. I see some neighbors who leave their wreaths and lights on the porch all year. You get to enjoy that "Chistmas feeling longer"
And shopping, that can be done all year. It takes the pressure off as Xmas nears.
But it is to early for Xmas songs. For the love of God, please wait until Xmas nears for that

I would tend to agree with the masses here on aying it's never too early to shop, but it might be too early to decorate.
Now shopping can include decorations. Just don't actually put them up. The store closest to me just put out their Christmas stuff last week. I walked in and found a snowglobe - with a Christmas Theme - that my niece would LOVE to have (she loves snow globes). So I bought it. But it's sitting in the trunk of my car until I get home in mid-November.
I've already bought my family's Christmas gifts. As a matter of fact, I bought them all yesterday (it was payday). Most of them were online, so it will take time for shipping, anyway. I only have one gift left to get for someone, and that won't even be available until November 17th.
Like others have said, it's never too early to buy Christmas gifts, as long as you have the means to keep them hidden for a while. I would personally be thrilled if my boyfriend gave me something on Christmas that I had casually mentioned wanting several months prior. So if you're in that situation, and you know of something that someone said they wanted back in March, buy it, wrap it, and hide it until the 25th of December.
In terms of decorations, this year, my family is decorating for Christmas in early November. Normally,we put up the tree the weekend before Thanksgiving (tradition since my dad was only home on weekends) and we started lighting it on Thanksgiving day. As kids, we took turns lighting it each night until Christmas Day. On Thanksgiving and Christmas, it would stay on all day long. All other days we would light it at 6:30 and turn it off at 9:00 (bed time).
But not this year. On November 22nd (the day before Thanksgiving) I have to report in to a new duty station in Germany, and they won't get to see me at all for the holidays. So we're celebrating early, and they are decorating before I get there. But that's very situational.
There are SOME things you can put out early. For example, a table center-piece that is themed for Winter, but not necessarily Christmas, could be put out now. If you put out candles, such as long non-themed taper candles, they can be set out early. But I believe (personal opinion) that true and obvious Christmas decorations should be saved until around Thanksgiving.

By November, it's deffinately too late to be too early.
I'd say it's too early to be putting up decorations - after all, hallowe'en comes first! But buying presents is deffinately okay now - after all, it can get expensive and this way you get time to do it all!
