I have a dry that sometimes will come on but over heats. Is it the heating element or should I just get a new dryer.

Check the vent line for a clog. Excess heat and moisture go out through there. If it gets clogged (I had a birds nest in mine once), then the heat comes back into the dryer (as does the moisture). If the line is clear, and the dryer heats up but does not dry, your blower or blower control is shot. That can be anywhere from $150-$450 in repairs. It will cost you a minimum of $60 for a service call to find out, most service companies will apply that $60 to the repair bill if you use them to to the work.

It's a $60 gamble to see if you are going to have a high repair bill or buy a new unit.

Check the vent. Mine got clogged and it caught fire. It started to not dry so well and the clothes had a burnt smell. The hose that leads outside had a big ball of lent in it. Jasy unattach it and look.
Also vermin can build nest in the back. Check the opennings.

sounds like the vents may be clogged, you need to clean it out good , that can also make it catch fire
