Go to www.dell.com. I have just bought a new one and they build them from scratch for you. If you tell them what you want they help you build one over the phone too.

Most any new computer that you buy today will handle your tasks. If you want to get into heavier stuff like gaming or graphics work then you need a beefy machine. Surfing, word processing, and watching some movies are easily handled by most machines today. Be careful though if you buy a "budget pc." Make sure it has at least 512MB of memory (recommend 1GB or more) and don't get stuck with a 1.xGHz processor. Dell is usually pretty high in customer satisfaction, although they are all slipping these days. I’ve managed hundreds of Dell machines and have had pretty good luck with them. As far as internet connection is concerned, that’s mostly up to your Internet Service Provider(ISP). DSL or Cable are the way to go. If you’re really lucky, you can get a fiber connection. It just really depends on how much you want to spend and what’s available to you. Around here I can get speeds up to 6Mbps. Ask your neighbors about their experience. Some services have great speed, but terrible customer service and lots of outages. That's why it's best to ask your neighbors what they've seen.

I agree, avoid HP (Hewlett Packard) I had a laptop that basically self-destructed after about 16 months. Never again.

In terms of what PC - I think everybody else has said it. A relatively standard PC should be OK, as long as it has a lot of RAM. Otherwise the use of internet could start making your PC slow down. Also I suspect as you said you wanted fast internet you may want to download things. You need a large hard drive as well, you can get cheap PCs now with 1-2gb RAM and minimum 250GB hard drives. Actually I was in ToysR Us a few moments ago they do them in there from £399 up. Mid range one is a penny shy of £600

Fast Internet - Buy high speed Internet connection (DSL line). Available from ragers like 128Kbps, 512Kbps, 1Mbps, 2Mbps. Higher the capacity higher the speed. And also buy latest modem or a switch with high capacity.

Word - Buy a high capacity Ram for example 1GB will be enough.

Watch DVDs - Buy a DVD ROM which can read at high speeds and which reads muliti regions.

You may get a standard one, but if you want a good one to play dvd's get a 1gb memory or more with intel core 2 duo or celeron duo for a faster way to use your computer. HP makes good media center computers their good for watching dvds, listen to music, good wordprocessing, and for the internet it depends on what is your ISP and I recommend to get DSL/Broadband. HP is a good, have 3 and have no problem with them work real good and I just bought a new one last month and it's working good. HP is the best.

if you want a PC to perform tasks quickly buy one with a HT processor.(hyper threading). As far as the Internet working quickly, that would depend on the connection you get. IE. dial up, broadband, etc. For fast Internet get DSL(broadband) with at least 1Mbps connection speed. Try BT or Orange. Stay clear of AOL, it`s rubbish ( my opinion).
hope this is of help.

since u r not looking for a gaming/ high-end graphics oriented machine, u should look for a motherboard which has an integrated video card, most of them come with a 64 or 128mb one nowadays. and u don't need a dual core for the above tasks. for the internet, look for an onboard ethernet card which is fast.

Just a standard one would do - but with a fast ISP. None of those items require a high spec machine.

I don't know about the fastest, but I can recommend that you avoid Hewlett Packard ones, I got one a few months back and ended up sending it back as it kept self destructing and eating all my files!
