First off I would need more information.

What operating system are you running?

Also what memory are you trying to free up? If you are trying to free up RAM then you need to remove programs from your start-up. Since you are installing a new hard drive I doubt that RAM is a problem.

Defragging is something you shouldn't need to do on a new hard drive since defragging is used to clean up a hard drive that has been in use.

Was this new hard drive ready to go? Did you need to format it? Did it come with an installation CD?

If it is the main hard drive on your computer then you need to make sure it has the system files on it. (/s) Then there are also settings that need to be configured by setting switches or placing jumper switches in the correct sequence that indicates whether or not the drive is a master or slave.

So you see there is more to installing a hard drive then just swapping out an old for a new. To get to the bottom of your problem you need to answer the questions I have raised.

Hard drives have nothing to do with memory. Hard Drives are STORAGE devices.
