Holding back bowel movements- People also can become constipated if they ignore their urge to have a bowel movement. Some people prefer to have bowel movements only at home. But holding in a bowel movement can cause constipation if the delay is too long.

The longer you retain, the greater the absorption of water and it does tend to harden stools, but not to the point where you get constipation by holding it just for a couple of hours; because you do not have toilet access - if that is the reason you are holding it.

Yes, this is true. The water in the stool gets absorbed back into the intestine. this makes the stool harder and and more difficult to pass. This is why people should be free to go to the bathroom whenever they need to.

It can in fact harden, since some of the moisture will be reabsorbed by the intestines. It goes along with, if you have to pee and you hold it too long you can damage the urethra (I know someone who had to have surgery to fix the damage from holding too long)

Um... Maybe we should all just go to the bathroom when we need to instead of waiting?
