It is the responsibility of the parents to be the example. Kids are not naturally grateful, respectful, appreciative, unselfish. Parents have to teach them how to be. Parents need to teach their children how to have a conscience and empathy. Parents need to teach their children the value of intrinsic rewards. Some parents follow the guidelines they learn in church. Some only use punishment and guilt. Others set boundaries and are consistent with consequences and rewards.
Morals and values are relative to each family, beyond the basic fundamentals (do unto others, do no harm). That's why parents need to be the ones to teach their children. They shouldn't leave that responsibility to the schools, the media, and the peers of their kids.

Teach your children by example. Spend time with them, discuss issues pertinent to their age, listen carefully when they talk, monitor the computer and T.V., be aware what they are being taught in school and by whom, know their friends, know thier friends parents.
If you can give a 'yes' answer to a request do it. Save the 'no's' for what is really important.
Remember discipline is not punishment. It is structuring with love and should be reasonable.
Don't be a dictator and drive them to others to mold their lives.
